A Narrative Inquiry on Grief Art Therapy Experiences of a Bereaved Child of His Father

Abstract
The purpose of this study is to explore what a child after paternal loss experiences in the art therapy process and what such experiences mean to him in his life. The participant was 11 years old male child who lost his father 8 months ago. This grief art therapy program was conducted once a week with a total of 18 sessions from February through July in 2019. The data was analyzed based on the five steps of Clandinin & Connelly(2000)¡¯s narrative inquiry. In results, the participant's art therapy experiences were categorized into six subjects: Chaos - the heaven has fallen, secret - forbidden words 'Father's death', confrontation - heartbroken longing has become blame, memory - healing with love, recovery and growth - ending deviation, and ending - life with going together. The meaning of his art therapy experiences were categorized into four subjects: Curing the pain with a warm and healing touch, embracing sadness of losing Father, blooming a little happiness even in the dark, and re-experiencing paternal love through reminiscences. This study implies to provide with deeper understanding of grief and loss feeling of a child with parental death, and to be utilized as effective data for better understanding of art therapy for bereaved children.
